Production Notes
Staging guidance and creative vision for bringing this story to life.
Staging overview
More Than We Can Carry is designed for intimate theatrical spaces that allow the audience to feel the traveler's journey viscerally. The production embraces minimalism, using lighting, sound, and ensemble movement to create locations and atmosphere rather than elaborate sets.
The stage remains largely bare, with the suitcase as the central physical element. Strategic use of levels, platforms, and simple furniture pieces can suggest different locations—the traveler's apartment, the ship's deck, immigration offices, a new room in a foreign land.
Lighting plays a crucial role in establishing mood and transition. Warm, golden tones for memories and hope; cool, harsh whites for bureaucratic spaces; deep blues for moments of isolation and introspection.

Ensemble roles
The ensemble (recommended 6-10 performers) serves multiple functions throughout the show. They are fellow travelers, border officials, memories, inner voices, and manifestations of the traveler's psychological landscape.
This fluidity allows for creative staging where the line between external reality and internal experience blurs. The ensemble should move with choreographed precision, creating visual metaphors for the traveler's emotional state.
Each ensemble member can develop a distinct character arc as a fellow traveler, allowing for moments of connection and contrast with the protagonist's journey.
